1) How do I benefit from using FT?

FilterTrader dramatically improves your confidence in finding trading ideas. FT frees up your time to focus on managing winning trades instead of searching for them.

FT

FT does this by scanning thousands of U.S. stocks, every 1/10 second, and continually notifying you the instant trading scenarios arise.

The goal is to find pockets of inefficiency, which can lead to profitable trades. FT lets you specify the type of inefficiency you want to find, and then does all the hard work.

The crux of the program is its idea filters. An idea filter is basically just a series of rules. The rules can be very simple, or they can utilize any of 1000’s of FT's technical, fundamental, and news criteria.  The search combinations are limited only by your imagination.

Once a stock meets your rules, you will immediately know about it.

FT uncovers an infinite number of scenarios. For example, suppose you wanted to find stocks that are:

  • Making a 1-minute, 10-minute, and 39-minute new low
  • Bouncing off their 13-minute bottom Bollinger band
  • Exhibiting an oversold 130-minute stochastics reading
  • Coming off a recent upwards earnings estimate revision
  • Rebounding off 60-minute support
  • Experiencing abnormal volume today because of news.
  • In a 20-day uptrend

FT lets you scan every U.S. stock using an “unlimited” number of timeframes and studies.  The more timeframes you pick, the more focused your ideas will be.

Can't find news worth trading ?

FT can. What other product lets you screen live breaking news using both quantitative and qualitative news criteria, infinite technical criteria, and thousands of fundamental criteria? Don't settle for plain old keyword news screening. FT is, by far, the most capable news screener on the market.

Tired of typing or clicking on symbols?

FT displays stock ideas automatically in a series of charts the second they meet your filter criteria. Each symbol has its very own chart--which is automatically updated. It's called Multi-Linking™ (Patent Pending) and it lets you continually scan dozens of ideas--without ever lifting a finger.

FT

2) Are idea filters easy to create?

Absolutely. There is no programming like in script-based software. So if you can type simple one-line rules like these, you can use FT:

Close > 25
Volume > ( 2 * AvgVolume )

News = "Earnings Guidance"

The best part is, we train you--for FREE. You'll be creating your own real-time idea filters the same day we install FilterTrader for you.

3) Can I run FT on my own PC?

Yes. FT runs entirely on your own PC.

With other products, you usually connect to servers over the internet that are shared with hundreds of other users.  It is virtually impossible to scan for the types of scenarios FT permits when sharing a server like this.

Running everything on your own PC also means that FilterTrader can store data in your own local memory (RAM) where it can be manipulated many times faster than from disk or from a shared remote server.

That results in:

  • Instant calculations
  • No restrictions on your search criterion
  • No symbol restrictions
  • Immediate window updates
Note: For institutional users who want a completely managed solution, FilterTrader Incorporated can host a remote server dedicated just to you.

4) Is the beta version free?

Yes.  There are no software fees whatsoever during the beta period--and there won't be until well into 2007. The only cost is for the 3rd party data you select.

Future software pricing, while not finalized, will continue to include a free version, as well as two higher-end professional versions.

Real-time price data is available from FRI Corporation at a special discounted rate of $49.95/month for 1300 symbols or $99.95/month for the entire market (+exchange fees).  Virtually no one else offers a full feed at these prices. There is a 30-day FREE data trial as well.

News packages start at $39 per month.  Over 20,000 sources are accessible through FilterTrader.  A 14-day FREE news trial is also available.

Filter Trader

5) Can I view and screen every stock in the U.S.?

Yes. FilterTrader is one of the only real-time screeners that seamlessly scans the entire U.S. stock universe (unlimited data package required).

For trader's requiring only a small number of symbols, a value-oriented data package is also available with access to 1300 symbols (see #4 above). These symbols can be changed easily at any time.

6) Can I run FT on a regular computer?

Yes. Here are the suggested minimum specs…

Processor:  2+ GHz AMD or Intel.  (Multiple processors or dual-core processors improve performance but are not necessary.)
RAM:  For 1300 symbols you need at least 1GB of RAM.  For all U.S. symbols you need 2GB.  If you want to crunch a lot of data, FT supports up to 4GB of data in memory with Windows Server 2003.
Hard Drive:  At least 20GB free space.  The drive’s rotational speed should be at least 7200 RPM, which is common these days.
Video Card:  16+ MB of video memory. Multi-monitors are supported. For layouts with 30+ charts, 64MB of video memory per monitor is recommended.
Operating System: Windows XP or Windows Server 2003. (FT is not Vista compatible yet but should be soon)
Internet:  Broadband cable, T1 or DSL (not satellite).  For 1300 symbols you need about 750 Kbps of bandwidth.  More the better. For all symbols you need 1.5-2 Mbps of bandwidth.

Great To Have :  An uninterruptible power supply, dual (redundant) internet connections, and a dual WAN router (like this). None of these items are required however.

FT

7) Is data sent directly to my PC?

Yes it is. FT should be left running during market hours so it doesn’t miss any data.

If your PC crashes or your internet goes down you can download backup data from www.filtertrader.com to fill in any blanks.  Contact support@filtertrader.com to request a backup file.  (Please note:  During the beta phase data may be somewhat limited)

8) Can I change my queries (filters) in real-time?

Yes. To change the rules of an idea filter (query):

  1. Open the Query Builder
  2. In the “Rule Criteria Box” enter your search criteria.  (Press “+” to add a new rule line.)
  3. Click the Baskets tab and “Include” the basket of symbols you want to scan
  4. Save the query

The changes will reflect immediately in any open Query Logs that are running that query.

The above assumes you have a Query Log already open. If you don't, simply open one and run your query in it as follows:

  1. Click on Window --> Query Log
  2. Open the Query Log properties
  3. Select the saved query in the “Queries to Display" box.
  4. Press <OK>

Symbols matching your criteria will then appear in the Query Log in real-time as they match your criteria.

FT

9) Is there a quick way to view idea filter (query) results in charts?

Yes!  FilterTrader’s exclusive Multi-Linking™ feature lets you automatically send a query's top 20 symbols to their own individual windows (e.g.,  chart windows, news windows, etc.).

FT

For example, you could configure 20 charts to show the most recent 20 stocks that just broke important news. These symbols, and their respective chart data automatically updated every 15 seconds to match your query results.

This lets you sit back and watch for stocks that resemble the patterns you are interested in--without any typing or clicking.

To enable Multi-Linking, check “ML” in Query Log Properties and enter the first link number for the series of windows you want to load symbols in.  For example, if you enter “2” in the “ML” box, FT will send the top 20 symbols from that Query Log to windows with link numbers 2-21.

Important: The order that symbols are displayed in the charts depends entirely on how you sort the results in the Query Log. The top symbol in the Query Log will be sent to the chart with link number 2, the second symbol in the Query Log would be sent to the chart with link number 3, etc...

10) Can you custom program something for me?

Yes. Custom programming is available for a reasonable hourly charge, billed in 5-minute increments.
